20 COOL FACTS ABOUT THE EARTH
The earth is among the 8 planets which along with sun form the solar system. It was formed more than 4 billion years ago. Earth is the only planet in the solar system which supports life. It has the ideal blend of temperature, oxygen and other essential gases. This has made the survival of humans possible. It is located at third position from the sun. It is also known as blue planet because three-fourths of the surface of earth is filled with water in the form of oceans, lakes, streams, glaciers, sea; etc.our planet earth is full of interesting facts and events. So here we have compiled a list of top 20 cool facts about our planet earth. So here you go:-
1. THE EARTH IS GEOID IN SHAPE, NOT SPHERE
There is a common myth that the earth is spherical in shape. But the shape of earth is actually geoid which means in bulges in the middle and is flat at the poles. This is an interesting term for our beloved earth.
2. IT DOESN’T TAKE 24 HOURS
Though it is commonly accepted that earth takes 24 hours to spin around its own axis. But that not the exact figure. It takes 23 hours 56 minutes 4 seconds for the earth to complete its one rotation which we call a day in earth’s time.
3. IT IS THE ONLY PLANET NOT NAMED AFTER GREEK OR ROMAN GOD
Interestingly, the earth is the only planet in the whole solar system which is not named after a roman or greek god. Its name comes old English and german words ‘eorthe and erda’ which means ground or soil.
4. THE DENSEST PLANET IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM
As a matter of fact, our earth is the densest planet in the whole solar system with an average density of 5.51 grams per cubic centimeter. Its credit goes to the inner and outer core of the earth.
5. ROTATION OF EARTH IS GRADUALLY SLOWING
One of the interesting facts is that the rotation of earth is gradually slowing down with passing time. This will have huge impact on day and time phenomenon on the earth.
6. POWERFUL MAGNETIC FIELD
The earth boasts of a powerful magnetic field. The molten iron in the core and mantle of the earth is responsible to create a region called ‘magnetosphere’ thousands of kilometers away from surface of the earth.
7. ONLY PLANET WITH PLATE TECTONICS
The earth is the only planet in the solar system which boasts of the plate tectonics. The process of movement of the plate tectonics is very useful for a lot of geological activities of earthquakes, volcanoes, oceanic trench formations, etc. such is the importance of these tectonic plates.
8. ONLY PLANET WITH 1 NATURAL SATELLITE
The earth is believed to be the only planet in the solar system with only one natural satellite which ofcourse as we know is Moon. The earth and moon have certain inter-relationships which influence a lot of geological and other activities.
9. ONLY PLANET TO HAVE WATER IN ALL THREE FORMS
Surprisingly, the earth is the only planet on earth which has water in all three forms solid, liquid and gas. Solid refers to the glaciers, liquid is the water in oceans, lakes, streams, rivers, etc and gaseous form is the water vapour in the air.
10. EARTH IS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING EVERY DAY
Shockingly, the earth is struck by lightning about 100 times a day and that accounts for 8.6 million times per day! Now this is definitely a mind blasting fact about the planet we live on.it is unbelievable and incredible.
11. EARTH IS THE ONLY PLANET TO EXPERIENCE THE SOLAR ECLIPSE
Out of all the planets in our solar system, the earth is the only planet which experiences the solar eclipse which are caused by certain positions of the earth, the moon and the sun. this interesting phenomenon of solar eclipse is thus unique to our mother earth planet.
12. EARTH IS LIKE A FAST MOVING SPACECRAFT
The speed at which the earth rotates around its own axis as well as revolves around the sun in the specified orbits can be compared to the speed of spacecraft. It actually moves faster than most of the spacecrafts which are sent by the earth to the space or the moon.
13. ALL THE WATER ON THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH CAN FIT INTO A LARGE SPHERE
About 70 percent of the surface of the earth is covered with water. it is present in different forms on the earth. If one tries to fit in all this water present on the earth’s surface then one would require a sphere shaped container of about 860 miles of diameter.
14. THE EARTH’S CORE IS AS HOT AS THE SUN ITSELF
The sun was considered the hottest substance to exist .but this is partially incorrect. The core of the earth is also as hot as the sun itself. So you can experience the same heat both above and below the earth.
15. EARTH CAN ALSO BE CALLED THE GOLDEN PLANET
The earth’s core is a host to a number of minerals and metals. For example if we look at the gold in the earth’s core it is enough to cover our entire planet in about 1.5 feet of this precious metal.hence we could also refer to our beloved planet as the Golden Planet.
16. CHALLENGER DEEP IS THE DEEPEST POINT ON THE EARTH
The earth’s deepest point is Challenger Deep of Mariana Trench. It is about 35,814 feet under the earth. That indeed is quite deep.
17. GRAVITATIONAL FORCE IS NOT THE SAME AT EVERY POINT ON THE EARTH
To break our common myth that the gravitational force is equal throughout the surface of the earth, here we have a cool and interesting fact. Scientifically the gravitational pull at the poles is stronger as compared to the equator. So if you weigh 160 pounds at the equator you would probably be 160.8 pounds at the poles all due to the gravity of the places.
18. A YEAR IS NOT EXACTLY OF 365 DAYS
As per our general norms it is assumed that a year is 365 days long. But as a matter of fact that’s not true. It is actually 365 and one-fourth of a day. This then adds up to be the 29th february in the leap year of 366 days.
19. THE MOUNTAINS ARE BOTH ON THE SURFACE AND UNDER THE SEA
It comes as a surprise but there are mountain ranges even under the sea. It infact turns out that one of the longest ranges called the mid-ocean ridge system is located in the sea!
20. THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURE ON THE EARTH
The hottest temperature that was ever recorded on the earth’s surface waFs 57.8 degrees in El Azizia, Libya in the year of 1922.
So these are a few cool and interesting facts about your mother earth. It maintains its uniqueness in all possible aspects.
